How to compare recruitment agencies for your vacancy
Start with the work you need done, then compare the individual recruiters who would manage the search. A recognisable agency name is useful context, but the consultant's sector knowledge, availability and approach matter to the day-to-day hiring process.
Write a brief that makes comparisons fair
Give each shortlisted recruiter the same role, location, employment type, expected start date and essential requirements. Separate the skills a candidate must have on day one from those your team can teach. Explain who will interview and make the hiring decision.
Compare these five things
- Relevant experience: which similar roles and markets does the recruiter understand? Ask how they would approach this particular vacancy.
- Service coverage: check locations, permanent or temporary recruitment, and the consultant responsible for delivery.
- Sourcing and screening: ask where candidates will come from, what the recruiter checks and what information accompanies a shortlist.
- Communication: agree updates, feedback responsibilities and the next milestone.
- Commercial terms: compare the fee basis, included work, payment timing and any replacement conditions alongside price.
Compare like-for-like fees
A percentage fee, fixed fee and temporary hourly charge describe different arrangements. Check what the percentage applies to, which services are included and which conditions could change the final charge. The lowest headline number is not a complete service comparison.
Where recruiters publish rates on TalentChoice, employers can compare available final charges after the required verification. Not every recruiter publishes a rate for every type of hire. Confirm the scope and written terms with your chosen recruiter before engagement.
Choose who receives your brief
Use TalentChoice to explore the person, their agency, industries and service locations. Select a recruiter whose experience fits the vacancy and send your brief to that person. TalentChoice's directory is not a ranked list of the “best” agencies, and a profile does not guarantee a hiring outcome.
Start with accounting recruiters, construction recruitment or the full recruiter directory. Read how the comparison process works before submitting a brief.
